SHUL ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND REMINDERS

Rosh Hashana and beyond:

  • Prozbul Signing. The [end of the] Shmittah (Sabbatical) year exempts one from paying back prior debts. To ensure that loans to the poor would continue, Hillel instituted the Prozbul document, which essentially transfers all of one’s loans [i.e., those funds owed to him/her] to the Beit Din (a Jewish Court), so the court will be responsible for them. The Shmittah year does not cancel the debts of one who transfers his documents to the Beit Din. In addition to loans owed an individual, a Prozbul should be written to cover bank and savings accounts, uncollected checks and overdue wages. The need for a Prozbul applies to women and men alike.  Click here (the Noticeboard) to find a two-page document in English, which briefly explains the theory and practice of Prozbul. At the bottom of the explanation, are links to sample copies of Prozbul documents, including Ashkenazi and Sefaradi versions in both Hebrew and English. This Motsaei Shabbat (Sept. 5th), beginning at 21:30 (an hour before slichot) a Bet Din will be sitting at the Berman Shul for the purpose of signing your prozbul documents.  Ketiva vaHatima Tova,  The Halakha Committee.

  • ...and, in addition, 3-4 paid [teenage] shleppers needed for heavy lifting for the Hashkama minyan: The Hashkama minyan needs shleppers for setting up and putting away the mechitza, Aron Kodesh, and most of all the tables and chairs for the Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur minaynim.
